Like all jobs at Simple Focus, the ideal candidate will be a multi-disciplinarian, checking some or all of these boxes:

  • Researcher
  • UX Designer
  • Writer

Let's talk about what each of these mean:


We need someone with a head for research—someone willing to spend weeks learning about people and understanding problems deeply before we design solutions. You’ll become a subject-matter expert in so many random things.

In your role as researcher, you’ll assist with and conduct your own qualitative and quantitative research. You’ll be a resource for the design team, helping them understand the people they’re designing for and informing their decisions throughout the creative process.

In addition to initial research, you’ll be asked to validate design solutions by putting wireframes, high-fidelity designs, prototypes, live websites or applications in front of users to determine which solutions are best for them and our clients.

UX Designer

As a designer, you’ll combine your knowledge of user and business needs with your deep understanding of UX and UI best practices to design solutions that are thoughtful, novel and beautiful.

You need to be comfortable with stacks of post-its in your pockets, happy holding a dry-erase marker and at home diagraming user flows, designing wireframes and building interactive prototypes.

You’ll also be asked to conduct usability workshops for our clients. Clients love what they get out of these workshops, and UX Designers are natural leaders in those rooms. You’ll guide the client, helping them solve their own problems (after all, they are the experts). This experience is a large part of what brings clients back to us, and you’ll be responsible for making our workshops meaningful, productive, enlightening and fun.


Everyone at Simple Focus is expected to communicate well, both with each other and with clients. First and foremost, you need to be able to communicate clearly and intelligently in writing and pay attention to proper voice and tone.

In your role as a UX Strategist and Designer, you’ll be asked to do more writing than most. You’ll prepare documentation for clients and our team - think heuristic reviews, research plans, direction documents and requirements. You’ll also be tasked with plenty of UX writing like microcopy, alt attributes for accessibility, and maybe the very occasional bit of site content.


In between the specific responsibilities of your role, there are some key skills and qualities we value for this and most roles at Simple Focus.

  • Thoroughness. You consider all factors when developing a solution, and you're invested in making sure every aspect of a project is executed to the same high level.
  • Eye for Design. We expect you to have the UX and UI design skills required to make your wireframes, prototypes, flows and documents look great. If you can also design pretty UIs, that’s a huge plus.
  • Curiosity. You genuinely want to learn, and you ask a ton of thoughtful questions.
  • Math Skills. Research often means having to do some math, so don't be shy if you spent some time as a Mathlete™.
  • Integrity. You stand up for your processes, results and decisions, and you’re able to communicate how and why you’ve made choices.
  • Collaborative. UX design is a team sport. You relish working in tandem with teammates and clients.
  • Independent. Even in a collaborative environment, there will be times when you’ll have to work alone. Thems the breaks, but you still have to get the work done.
  • Adaptable, Agile and Tenacious. Unfortunately, project budgets and timelines aren’t limitless. And it’s rare, but sometimes, your research goes sideways or the UX budget wasn’t large enough to begin with. You need to be creative in how you approach and scale your work to provide value, even when conditions aren’t ideal.

We offer full health insurance, retirement and a total of six weeks off per year. We’re currently hiring in Memphis, Chattanooga or Portland. These are three rad towns, so it’s a pretty sweet deal. Or, if you’d rather work remotely, we’re open to that conversation, too.

Here's how this will work.

  3. In the coming weeks, if we decide you could be a fit for this role, we’ll contact you about an initial interview. If you don’t hear from us, that means we decided you’re not right for this position today, but we’ve got your name in the pool for similar roles down the road.
  4. You’ll meet with one or two decision makers on our team for about 30 minutes. If you’re local to one of our offices, you’ll come in. Otherwise, we’ll use Zoom conference for a video call.
  5. If that goes well, we'll talk about timing. We'll mutually keep in touch over the next several months until the timing lines up, then we'll move into the real deal.
  6. We’ll set up a second interview, this time with some department heads and maybe a couple of potential teammates, too.
  7. There might be a third call, or we may go straight to talking about contracts, start dates and all that.
  8. You give a respectful notice to your current employer.
  9. We order your computer.
  10. You report to your first day of work!
